I finally got the chance to photograph my beautiful wife for a maternity shoot the other day. The common complaint from her is that I can make time to photograph other people but not her. Which is true, but this is different. She’s carrying our little girl and she’s about to pop, so time is of the essence!
We picked our local beach, Grange Beach, and timed the sunset just right with the right amount of clouds to add a bit of drama. It also gave me a chance to test my new camera, the Fujifilm x100f. I have recently switched from Sony and am loving every minute with the little Fuji. I also have never used off camera flash, or been able to use it properly, so I had my chance to get it right with the new Nissin Di700A and Air Controller. I was wanting to light the subject, my wife, correctly whilst retaining the beautiful sunset. As it turned out, the background almost looks fake, but I can assure you, it’s real!
After playing around in manual mode, I worked out the exposure and made the necessary adjustments. Lengthening the shutter speed increased the exposure for the background, while I adjusted the flash output to the desired level for my wife. I think the photos came out great, and has had a lot of attention on Facebook, partly due to the amount of friends my wife has, but also not a lot of people knew she was pregnant! We deliberately didn’t post anything about it because we didn’t want to jinx the pregnancy, but things are going great and it was time to reveal!
I hope our baby girl grows up and sees these photos and thinks, “Mum looks great! Dad’s super lucky!”
